Air Drop

AIR DROP
Climb up, peer down, question your life choices, jump. A giant airbag catches you at the bottom. What happens to your dignity is your business.
Air Drop is a freefall jump. You climb a tall tower to a jump platform, step off the edge and drop through thin air onto a giant inflatable airbag below. No ropes, no harness and no bungee to bounce you back up. Just you, a lot of air and a very big cushion. The hardest part isn't the fall. It's persuading your feet to take that first step.
It's a huge air-filled landing bag, like the ones stunt performers fall into. Powerful fans keep it inflated, and as you land, air pushes out through vents in the sides. That means the bag sinks softly beneath you rather than firing you back out. The force of the landing is spread across your whole body. Clever stuff, and very reassuring when you're standing at the top.
You start on the ground with a safety briefing, and your Activity Leader shows you the jump position. Practise it, remember it, use it. Then you climb the tower stairs one at a time. Up top, the Activity Leader checks the airbag is clear and gives you the nod. Count yourself down (or don't), step off and enjoy a short, loud burst of freefall. Climb off the side of the bag, grin at everyone and decide whether you're going again.
Nobody has, right up until they do. There's no skill to learn beyond the jump position, so this one is all about nerve. Standing on the edge with your heart pounding is the whole point, and stepping off anyway feels brilliant. If you reach the top and your legs vote no, you can walk back down the stairs with your head held high.
You'll need to manage the stairs without help, and it's not suitable if you're pregnant or have an ongoing injury.
Comfy clothes you can move in and shoes with a good grip for the stairs. Empty your pockets, lose the jewellery and tie back long hair. Your Activity Leader will tell you if shoes need to come off before you jump. Bring your bravery. Or borrow some from your mates.
DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE?
No. Your Activity Leader explains exactly how to jump and land before you climb the tower.
IS AIR DROP SAFE?
Air Drop is a high-risk activity. Jumping from height can cause serious injury if you miss the airbag, and trips or slips can happen on the tower stairs. Only jump when the Activity Leader tells you the airbag is clear, and always use the jump position you were shown. Do not dive, flip or jump head first. Hold the handrail on the stairs.
WHAT IF I GET TO THE TOP AND BOTTLE IT?
Then you walk back down. No shame at all, and plenty of people go back up for another look later.
WHO CAN'T DO AIR DROP?
It isn't suitable if you're pregnant or have an ongoing injury. You also need to be able to climb two flights of stairs without help.
