Archery Battles

A player with long hair and a full face mask draws a bow loaded with a foam-tipped arrow during Archery Battles at Camp Wildfire

ARCHERY BATTLES

Archery, but fast, and without the pointy bits. Grab a bow, dive behind cover and take aim at your mates. All the thrill of paintball, none of the welts.

What are archery battles?

Archery battles is a team game where two sides shoot foam-tipped arrows at each other with lightweight bows. Everyone wears a full face mask, ducks behind cover and tries to tag the other team without getting hit. You might know it as combat archery. Think paintball or dodgeball, but with a bow in your hand and a lot more shouting.

How do you play archery battles?

Two teams line up at opposite ends of the arena, with a no-go zone in the middle to keep a safe distance between you. The Activity Leader gives the signal and it's on. Pick your moment, pop out from cover, shoot and duck back in. Get hit and you're out. In some games, catching an enemy arrow brings a teammate back in, which is the most heroic thing you'll do all day.

Game styles vary. Elimination is the classic: last team standing wins. Others have you capturing a flag, protecting one chosen player or knocking down targets on the other team's side.

What happens at a beginner archery battles session?

It starts with a safety briefing and the rules of play, and your Activity Leader checks everyone's mask fits properly. Then a quick crash course: hold the bow, nock a foam-tipped arrow onto the string and draw back smoothly. A few practice shots to find your range, and you're into fast rounds of battle, with just enough time between games to argue about tactics.

Never picked up a bow?

Not a problem. The bows are light and easy to draw, so this is less about perfect technique and more about quick thinking, teamwork and nerve. Even if your aim is questionable, a well-timed dodge or a cheeky flank can win the round. A foam tip can still sting a bit and leave a bruise, so masks stay on for the whole game. Bragging rights last much longer.

What should I wear for archery battles?

Closed-toe shoes with decent grip and comfy clothes you can sprint, crouch and dive in. Games are often played outdoors on uneven ground or among trees, so dress for the weather and a bit of mud. Ditch dangly jewellery and tie back long hair so nothing snags on the bowstring.

FAQ
DO I NEED ANY ARCHERY EXPERIENCE?

No. Your Activity Leader shows you how to use the bow before the first game.

ARE ARCHERY BATTLES SAFE?

Foam-tipped arrows can cause bruising, so full face masks must be worn at all times. Do not take your mask off in the playing area, even between rounds. Do not cross into the no-go zone. Collisions with other players or barriers, and trips on uneven ground, can also happen, so watch where you run.

HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM NORMAL ARCHERY?

Target archery is about precision at a still target. Archery battles uses the same basic bow skills but adds moving targets, cover and teamwork, with soft foam tips instead of sharp ones.

DOES IT HURT?

A hit can sting a little and may leave a small bruise. The face mask protects your face and eyes, which is why it stays on.
