BOLLYWOOD DANCE
Cue the wind machine. Bollywood dance is colour, drama and big joyful moves, and for one session the leading role is all yours.
Bollywood dance is the energetic, expressive style of dance seen in Hindi-language films made in Mumbai, the film industry known as Bollywood. It blends Indian classical and folk dance with modern styles such as hip hop and jazz. Every move helps tell a story, through hand gestures, facial expressions, footwork and big, bold body movements. It's dramatic, joyful and meant to be danced with a smile.
In the films, songs are woven right into the story. A big dance number might mark a wedding, a festival or someone falling head over heels in love, often with a huge cast dancing in perfect sync.
Classical Indian dance, such as Kathak and Bharatanatyam, brings the graceful hand gestures called mudras, the expressive faces and the sharp, rhythmic footwork.
Folk dance adds the energy. Bhangra, from the Punjab region, is all bouncing shoulders and arms flung high, while Garba, from Gujarat, is danced in swirling circles.
Modern styles bring the attitude, with hip hop, jazz and pop moves mixed right in. It's a glorious mash-up, which is exactly the point.
After a warm-up, your Activity Leader teaches a few signature moves, like screwing in the light bulb and patting the dog, plus some simple hand gestures and steps. Along the way you might hear the story behind the song and what the moves mean. Then it all comes together in a short group routine, danced to a big Bollywood track. Expect drama, energy and at least one moment where you feel like the star of your own film.
Absolutely. The moves are big, clear and easy to copy, and nobody expects perfect technique first time. What matters is expression, so the more you commit to the drama, the better it looks. It's a group routine too, so you're never dancing alone. Bring your whole personality. The eyebrows are part of the choreography.
Clothes and shoes you can move in, and don't be shy about colour. Anything that swishes when you spin is a bonus. Bring water, as it's a proper workout in disguise.
DO I NEED ANY DANCE EXPERIENCE?
No. The moves are taught step by step and built into a simple group routine.
IS BOLLYWOOD DANCE SAFE?
It's an active dance session, often on an outdoor surface, so falls, muscle strains and bumping into other dancers can happen. Warm up first, wear shoes with good grip and keep some space around you. Do not carry on if something hurts.
WHAT ARE MUDRAS?
Mudras are hand gestures from Indian classical dance. Each one has a meaning, and together they help tell the story of the song.
