Drag Life Drawing

DRAG LIFE DRAWING
Grab a stick of charcoal and sketch fabulous drag performers as they strike pose after pose. Talent optional, glitter guaranteed.
Drag life drawing is a life drawing session where the models are drag performers, posing in full costume and make-up. You sketch them from life as they hold a series of timed poses, from quick, playful gestures to longer, more dramatic ones. It's less about producing a masterpiece and more about celebrating bodies, self-expression and a good time.
Drag is a form of performance where people play with gender, costume and character, usually in a big, bold and theatrical way. Drag queens often perform an exaggerated take on femininity, and drag kings an exaggerated take on masculinity. Plenty of performers sit somewhere else entirely, sometimes called things or drag creatures. Drag has deep roots in queer culture and cabaret, and it thrives on glamour, humour and confidence. In other words, perfect models for a drawing session.
Life drawing usually starts with short poses, sometimes as quick as one or two minutes. These gesture drawings are all about catching movement and energy, not details, so you work fast and loose. The poses then get longer, giving you time to look at shape, proportion and light and shade. Charcoal, pencil, graphite and pastels are all classic materials. A handy tip: spend more time looking at the model than at your paper. The best sketches often come from the moments you stop worrying and just draw.
Yes, absolutely. No drawing skills are required, and nobody is judging your wonky arms. The whole point is to have fun, express yourself and hype up the performers. Your Activity Leader will guide you through each pose with simple prompts. Feeling brave? Some sessions let you pick a costume, get dragged up and strike a pose for the group yourself.
Traditional life drawing often uses a nude model in a quiet studio. Drag life drawing swaps that for sequins, wigs, heels and a party atmosphere, with performers who love to play to the room. The mood is warm, inclusive and loud in the best way, and bodies of every shape and size are celebrated. It's a brilliant first taste of life drawing for anyone who finds the traditional version a bit daunting.
DO I NEED ANY DRAWING EXPERIENCE?
No. Drag life drawing is about fun and self-expression, not talent, and all the drawing materials are provided.
ARE THE MODELS NUDE?
No. The performers pose in full drag, with costumes, wigs and make-up.
DO I HAVE TO GET DRESSED UP?
Not at all. Getting dragged up to pose for the group is completely optional, so you can stay happily behind your sketchbook.
WHAT IS A GESTURE DRAWING?
A gesture drawing is a quick sketch, often made in a minute or two, that captures the movement and energy of a pose rather than its details.
