Raft Building

RAFT BUILDING

Forget white-water rafting. Build your own vessel from barrels, poles and rope, launch it with your crew and try very hard not to sink.

What is raft building?

Raft building is a team challenge where you build a working raft from basic materials, usually plastic barrels, wooden poles and rope, then launch it and paddle it across the water. It tests planning, knots, teamwork and nerve in equal measure. The goal is simple: stay afloat, stay roughly dry and beat the other crews.

How do you build a raft?

The barrels, or drums, are sealed and full of air, and they do the floating. More barrels means more buoyancy, but also a bigger raft to steer.

Wooden poles, called spars, form the frame. They run across and along the barrels to create a deck you can sit or kneel on.

Then comes the rope work. A clove hitch starts and finishes each lashing, and a square lashing locks two poles together where they cross. Diagonal lashings brace the frame so it doesn't twist. Loose lashings are where most rafts go wrong, so pull every turn tight.

Finally, the launch. Carry it in, climb aboard with care and paddle in time. Or at least in roughly the same direction.

What happens at a raft building session?

You'll start with a safety briefing and get fitted with a buoyancy aid and helmet. Your Activity Leader then shows you the materials and the key knots before setting your team loose. Plan, lash, check, repeat. Once your raft is launched, there's usually a race or a challenge on the water. Some crews glide to glory. Others get to know the lake on a more personal level.

Is raft building good for beginners?

Absolutely. Nobody expects you to be a sailor, and the knots are easier than they look once someone shows you. It works brilliantly for groups of friends and brand new teammates alike, because everyone has a job and every idea gets tested for real. Expect strong opinions about barrel placement and at least one self-appointed captain.

What should I wear for raft building?

Swimwear or clothes you're happy to get soaked, plus shoes that strap or lace on securely and can go in the water, as lake beds can hide sharp stones and sticks. Bring a towel, dry clothes and a second, dry pair of shoes for afterwards. Your future self will thank you.

FAQ
IS RAFT BUILDING SAFE?

Raft building is a high-risk activity. A raft can break apart or capsize, tipping you into cold water without warning, and poles and barrels can trap fingers or limbs. Everyone wears a buoyancy aid, and the Activity Leader watches the water throughout. Do not go on the water without your buoyancy aid, do not go in barefoot and do not put your fingers between poles and barrels when lifting.

DO I NEED TO BE ABLE TO SWIM?

Yes. You wear a buoyancy aid, but raft building on open water is not suitable for non-swimmers.

WHAT KNOTS ARE USED IN RAFT BUILDING?

The clove hitch and the square lashing are the key ones. The clove hitch starts and finishes a lashing, and the square lashing joins two poles where they cross.

WILL I GET WET?

Almost certainly. Bring a towel, dry clothes and dry shoes.
