SURVIVAL SKILLS
Stuck in the wild with nothing but your wits? Learn what really matters first, build a working trap model and find out if you'd make it.
Survival skills are the practical know-how that keeps you safe, warm and findable if you're ever stranded outdoors. They cover protection from the elements, signalling for help, finding safe water, making fire and getting food, all in the right order. Think of it as a crash course in staying alive, minus the crash.
Step zero is not panicking. It's harder than it sounds, which is why many survival experts teach the word STOP: stop, think, observe and plan. Then you work through the priorities in order.
Protection comes first: first aid, the right clothing and shelter from wind, rain and cold.
Location is about being found. Stay put if you can and make yourself obvious, with a whistle, bright colours or a big signal laid out on the ground.
Water is next. Anything from a stream or pond needs to be made safe first, usually by boiling or filtering. Tempting as it looks, that crystal-clear brook is not your friend until you've treated it.
Fire brings warmth, light, a way to boil water and a serious lift in morale.
Food comes last. You can go a lot longer without it than without water, however hungry you feel.
Traditional traps run on three principles: trigger, tension and release. A bent sapling or a weight stores the tension, and the trigger holds it in check until something disturbs it. Then the release lets everything go. Building a training model is a clever way to understand the engineering, with zero actual trapping involved. In the UK, trapping wild animals is controlled by law, so this is strictly educational. The local wildlife thanks you.
No problem. Your Activity Leader walks you through each priority, shares practical skills you could genuinely use and then drops your group into a survival scenario to put the lot together. It's surprisingly fun, properly useful and a great way to find out who in your group would thrive in the wild and who would be first to eat the mystery berries.
Dress for the woods and the weather: layers, a waterproof, long trousers and sturdy closed-toe shoes. Consider it your first survival test. Protection starts with what you put on.
DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE?
No. Your Activity Leader explains everything from the ground up, so complete beginners are very welcome.
IS IT SAFE TO LEARN SURVIVAL SKILLS?
It's a hands-on outdoor session, and woodland ground, branches and natural materials can cause trips, cuts and scrapes. Follow your Activity Leader's instructions at all times. Do not eat or drink anything you find outdoors unless an expert has told you it is safe.
WHAT ARE THE PRIORITIES OF SURVIVAL?
Protection, location, water, fire and food, usually in that order. Staying calm comes before all of them.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO FIRST IF YOU GET LOST OUTDOORS?
Stop and stay calm. If it's safe, stay where you are, take stock of your surroundings and make yourself easy to find.
