Traitors

Traitors is a woodland murder mystery game where campers work together to solve a string of crimes and unmask whoever is behind them. It's a social deduction game, which means the clues only get you so far. The rest comes down to reading people, spotting a bluff and persuading the group you're right. Outrageous accusations encouraged.

The game begins with a crime in the forest and a whole camp full of suspects. Clues appear as the game goes on, and it's up to everyone to piece together what happened and who's responsible. Is it a badger on the midnight prowl? A squirrel gone mad on too many nuts? A fox living up to its reputation, or a hawk swooping on easy prey? Your Patrol (the team you join when you arrive) is right in the thick of it. Everyone gathers to share theories, point fingers and vote on who they think did it.

Some players are secretly given special characters, each with a part to play. Some are there to help the group find the truth. Others are there to muddy the waters, throw out red herrings and hinder the investigation. Nobody knows who has what, which is exactly what makes every friendly smile a little bit suspicious.

You'll pick it up in minutes. If you've ever played a party game like Werewolf or Mafia, or read a whodunnit and shouted at the detective, you already have the instincts. There are no wrong theories, only unconvincing ones. Beginners often make the best detectives (and the worst liars), which is half the fun.

Watch what people do, not just what they say. Who's very keen to point the finger elsewhere? Who changes their story? Who goes quiet when the votes start? Keep track of who backed whom, trust your gut and don't be afraid to make a scene. Just remember that the loudest accuser in the circle might be hiding something too. And if you're secretly one of the troublemakers? Stay calm, stay helpful and point the finger just often enough.
