WABI-SABI POTTERY

Get your hands in the clay and make something beautifully imperfect. Wonky is not a mistake here. It's the whole point.

What is wabi-sabi pottery?

Wabi-sabi pottery is hand-built ceramics inspired by wabi-sabi, a Japanese outlook that finds beauty in things that are simple, natural and imperfect. Rather than aiming for perfectly symmetrical pots, you shape clay by hand and let the texture, asymmetry and fingerprints stay. It's slow, tactile and refreshingly low-pressure.

Wabi-sabi is often loosely translated as the beauty of imperfection. It's also an invitation to stop sanding off the rough edges, in clay and maybe elsewhere too. It sits in the same family of ideas as kintsugi, the art of repairing broken pottery with gold.

What are the main hand-building techniques?

Hand-building means making pottery without a wheel. Just you, your hands, some clay and a few simple tools.

Pinch pots: roll a ball of clay, press your thumb into the centre and pinch the walls thinner as you rotate it. The oldest trick in the book, and still one of the most satisfying.

Coil building: roll long snakes of clay and stack them in rings to build up height. Blend the coils smooth or leave them visible for texture.

Slab building: roll clay flat like pastry, cut out shapes and join them into dishes, tiles or boxes. Joins are made by scoring both surfaces and adding slip, which is watery clay that acts like glue.

How do you decorate hand-built pottery?

Surface decoration is where the character comes in. Press in leaves, bark, lace or found objects for texture, carve lines with a loop tool, or add sculpted details on top. Pieces can be left raw and earthy, painted or glazed. Some clays air-dry, while others are fired in a kiln to make them hard and durable. Either way, the marks of your hands are part of the finish.

Is pottery good for beginners?

It's about the most beginner-friendly clay work there is, because the whole philosophy says imperfect is good. Your Activity Leader demonstrates each technique, then you can make a bowl, a vessel, a sculpture or something nobody can name. Plenty of people find working with clay calming and absorbing, a proper chance to switch off your phone and use your hands.

What should I wear for pottery?

Clothes you're happy to get a bit muddy, with sleeves you can push up. Take off rings and bracelets before you start, as clay gets everywhere. Short nails make pinching easier.

FAQ
DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE?

No. Your Activity Leader demonstrates the techniques, and all the clay and tools are provided.

IS POTTERY SAFE?

Handling clay and simple tools can cause a small cut or graze, and lifting heavy clay can strain your back. Use tools only as your Activity Leader shows you, and do not point sharp tools towards yourself or anyone else. Ask for help lifting large blocks of clay.

WHAT DOES WABI-SABI MEAN?

Wabi-sabi is a Japanese idea that finds beauty in things that are imperfect, natural and simple. It's often loosely translated as the beauty of imperfection.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HAND-BUILDING AND THROWING?

Hand-building shapes clay with your hands and simple tools, using pinch, coil and slab techniques. Throwing shapes clay on a spinning potter's wheel.
