Brian d'Souza (Auntie Flo) - Making Music from Mushrooms

Brian d'Souza, aka Auntie Flo, is a musician best known for uplifting, dancefloor-ready highlife rhythms. He has since taken a far more experimental and unpredictable path: making music from, and with, plants and mushrooms.

Living things create electricity, and Brian turns it into musical notes. For one album, he captured electrical activity from four very different species of mushroom: oyster, reishi, lion's mane and shiitake. Some of it was recorded during a commission at the 2023 Chelsea Flower Show, in its mushroom den.

His first foray into this bio-sonification world came in 2022, when he used PlantWave technology on a selection of herbs for Scotland's Dandelion Project. As he puts it: “It's kind of like a duet between myself and the plant, or the fungi, or the living thing.”

Come and hear about Brian's process, then see and hear the musical mushroom magic for yourself. It's part talk, part listening session and entirely unlike anything else in the woods.
