Calum Stott

CALUM STOTT
A Cumbrian farmer, a hunt for England's ancient lifting stones and a 130kg find in someone's back garden. Strong stuff.
Calum Stott is a farmer from Cumbria who has made it his mission to find England's ancient lifting stones. For centuries, these stones were used as a show of strength, and Calum is on a journey to share and preserve the history of this sporting culture.
Lifting stones are heavy stones that people lifted to prove their strength. Calum found they were popular in places such as Ireland, Scotland and Iceland, and figured they must exist across England too.
He was right. He located a 130kg (287lb) stone in a couple's back garden in Teesdale, and he's now searching for more.
Calum shares the story of his hunt and the history behind the stones. It's a proper slice of forgotten sporting heritage, and you'll never look at a big rock in the same way again.
