Linett Kamala

Linett Kamala is a DJ who has spent four decades rewiring the British sound system. Known as the Sound System Queen, she played her first Notting Hill Carnival at 15, back in 1985, and now sits on its Board of Directors. She was also named DJ Mag's Best of British 2023 Underground Hero.

An actual icon on the decks, that's what. Linett brings pure Carnival soundsystem energy straight to the dancefloor, and once the bass kicks in there's really only one thing to do about it. Loosen up, get moving and enjoy every minute.

Her talk centres on the Basstone Maypole, her audio-visual installation. It takes an old English tradition, strips out the folk tunes and rebuilds it with bass bins, LED ribbons and dancehall beats.

From there it becomes a conversation about Carnival, colonial legacy, joy and what happens when a tradition gets rewritten by the community that inherited it. Properly brilliant, and well worth pulling up a seat for.
