Aerial Bungee

Aerial bungee at camp: a smiling adult in full-length patterned leggings and a harness bounces in mid-air on a bungee with arms outstretched, with trees and a rigging frame behind

AERIAL BUNGEE

Strap in, push off and let the bungee do the heavy lifting. Part dance, part trampoline and the closest most of us will get to flying.

What is aerial bungee?

Aerial bungee is a workout where you're clipped into a harness on a stretchy bungee cord anchored above your head. The cord takes some of your weight, so you can leap, bounce, swing and spin to music in ways your knees would never normally allow. You'll also hear it called bungee fitness or bungee dance. Think dance routine meets trampoline, with a lot more flying.

How does bungee fitness work?

You get your own cord, fixed to a sturdy rig overhead, and it clips onto a harness around your waist and hips. Push off the floor and the bungee stretches, then fires you back up with extra lift and a cushioned landing. Lean forward and you swoop. Lean back and you hang in the air like you've briefly forgotten how gravity works.

The moves sound like a superhero's training plan: flying leaps, star jumps, running jumps, spins and the classic superhero pose. String a few together to a big playlist and suddenly you've got a routine.

What happens at a beginner aerial bungee session?

First, your Activity Leader fits your harness and checks it properly. No shortcuts. Then you start small, with gentle bounces and steps to feel how the cord pulls. Once you trust it, you build up to bigger jumps, swings and turns. By the end you'll be moving through a routine together, in time with the music and, ideally, in time with each other. Ideally.

Never tried aerial bungee?

Good news: nobody turns up as a pro. There are no fancy skills to master first, and the cord takes enough of your weight that big moves feel surprisingly easy. It's silly, joyful and a proper sweat that somehow doesn't feel like one. Expect to laugh at yourself, and at everyone around you, a lot. If all that bouncing makes your head spin, take a breather and jump back in when you're ready.

What should I wear for aerial bungee?

Leggings, joggers or loose trousers. No bare legs, as the harness hugs your hips and thighs and can rub. Pick a top that stays put when you're mid-air, wear trainers and ditch the dangly jewellery. Empty your pockets too, unless you fancy raining keys on the people below.

FAQ
DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE?

No. Beginner sessions start from the very first bounce, and all the kit is provided.

IS AERIAL BUNGEE SAFE?

Aerial bungee is a high-risk activity. Falls or getting caught up can happen if a harness or rig fails, so every harness is fitted and checked by the Activity Leader before you leave the ground. Do not unclip, loosen or adjust your harness yourself. Bouncing can make some people dizzy and affect balance, so stop and tell the Activity Leader straight away if you feel unwell.

ARE THERE SIZE LIMITS FOR THE HARNESS?

Yes. Harnesses have weight and waist size limits, so check the activity details before you go.

IS AERIAL BUNGEE A GOOD WORKOUT?

It gets your heart pumping and works your legs and core, though most people are laughing too hard to notice.
