Drone Flying

A drone's-eye view looking down on dense pine forest, with tents and small woodland clearings dotted among the trees at Camp Wildfire

DRONE FLYING

Take the controls, lift off and see the world from above. Just remember which stick does what before you meet a tree.

What is drone flying?

Drone flying means piloting a small, remote-controlled aircraft, usually a quadcopter with four spinning rotors. Pilots use a handheld controller to steer it up, down and around, often while a built-in camera sends a live view back to a screen. People fly drones for fun, for racing and for aerial photography and video, capturing views you simply can't get from the ground.

What are the different types of drone?

Camera drones are the ones most people picture. They're steady, often use GPS to hold their position and carry a camera on a gimbal, which keeps footage smooth.

FPV drones, short for first-person view, are flown with goggles that show you exactly what the drone sees. They're fast, agile and built for racing and freestyle tricks.

Mini drones are small and light, which makes them handy for learning the basics.

Fixed-wing drones look more like tiny planes and are built to cover long distances. Runway not included.

How do you control a drone?

Most controllers have two sticks. One handles throttle, which moves the drone up and down, and yaw, which spins it left or right on the spot. The other controls pitch, tilting it forwards and backwards, and roll, sliding it left or right. It sounds like a lot, but your thumbs learn quickly. Beginners start with a simple hover, then try gentle squares and circles before moving on to smoother moves like an orbit or a slow reveal shot.

Is drone flying good for beginners?

Yes, and it's more intuitive than you might think. Many modern drones help with stability, so you can focus on steering rather than just staying in the air. Your Activity Leader starts you off with the controls and the safety rules, then helps you build up to flying manoeuvres and grabbing some footage. The first time you nail a smooth pass over the trees, you'll feel like a film director. Beret optional.

What are the rules for flying a drone in the UK?

There are rules, and they matter. Keep your drone where you can see it and fly below the legal height limit. Stay well away from people, buildings and airports. Depending on your drone, you may also need to register before flying outdoors. The rules can change, so check the latest official guidance before you fly your own.

FAQ
DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE?

No. Beginners are welcome, and your Activity Leader explains the controls before you fly.

IS DRONE FLYING SAFE?

Drones have fast-spinning propellers that can cut skin, and a drone can fall or fly off course if it loses control. Only fly when the Activity Leader says so, and keep well away from other people. Do not try to catch a drone in the air, and do not touch it until the propellers have fully stopped.

DO I NEED A LICENCE TO FLY A DRONE?

You don't need a pilot's licence to fly for fun in the UK, but depending on your drone you may need to register and pass a short online test. Check the latest official guidance before you fly.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD DRONE SHOT?

Smooth, slow movements. Gentle orbits, slow climbs and reveal shots, where the camera moves past something to show the view behind it, tend to look the most cinematic.
