Lego Robots

LEGO ROBOTS
Build a robot, teach it some moves and watch it roll off across the table. Getting it to dance is optional, but strongly encouraged.
Lego robots are small robots you build from Lego pieces around a programmable brick, which acts as the robot's brain. You add motors, wheels and sensors, then write simple code on a tablet or laptop to tell the robot what to do. It's building, engineering and coding rolled into one, and seeing your creation move for the first time is a proper thrill.
The programmable brick is a small computer. It stores your code and sends instructions to everything plugged into it.
Motors turn the wheels, arms or grabbers. You decide how fast they spin, which way and for how long.
Sensors let the robot react to the world. A touch sensor knows when it bumps into something, a colour sensor can follow a line and a distance sensor can spot a wall before it hits it.
Cables link it all together, so the brick can talk to every part it controls.
Block coding is a way of writing programs by dragging and snapping together blocks on a screen, instead of typing lines of code. Each block is an instruction, like move forward, turn or wait. A loop repeats actions, and an if-then block lets the robot make a choice, such as stopping when a sensor spots a wall. It's how lots of people take their first steps in programming, and it uses the same logic as the code behind real robots.
You team up and build your robot first, following a design made for the job. Then your Activity Leader shows you the coding app and how to send your first commands. Start simple: forward, back, turn. Then add sensors and loops and see what happens. Things will go wrong, and fixing them (known as debugging) is half the fun. Before long you'll be setting challenges, racing robots or choreographing a dance routine.
No problem at all. Block coding is made for beginners, and you'll see results within minutes. There's no maths test and no jargon to learn first. Working in a team helps too: one of you builds, one of you codes and everyone takes the glory when it works.
DO I NEED ANY CODING EXPERIENCE?
No. Your Activity Leader shows you how the coding app works, and all the kit is provided.
DO I NEED TO BE GOOD AT LEGO?
Not at all. You follow a set design to build the robot, so the clever bit is the coding.
WHAT CAN A LEGO ROBOT DO?
It can drive, turn, follow a line, avoid obstacles and react to touch, colour or distance, depending on its sensors and your code.
