Covid-19 Government Advice

The UK is the latest government to recommend the use of homemade face masks

while in "enclosed public spaces where social distancing is not possible"

Wearing a face mask helps stop people from becoming infected in two ways:

1) By blocking most airborne droplets filled with virus from being inhaled

2) By stopping the wearer from touching their own mouths and noses

The odd-sock face mask is a great way to recycle your old odd-socks while making a quick,

incredibly simple face mask.

You will only need:

•  One old sock

•  Scissors

Step 1) Make two cuts in your sock

Cut your sock once above the heel and the other below the ankle cuff.

Move the cuff and heel pieces to one side.

Step 2) Open up the sock

Cut down the edge of your sock so that you can open it up into a rectangle.

Step 3) Cut slits in your sock

Using your finger as a spacer, cut slits up each side of the rectangle.

Make sure the slits are also a finger-space away from the edge to avoid ripping.

Step 3 of making a facemask from a sock

Step 4) Cut the strings to go around your ears

Bring back the foot piece of sock and cut two strips from this fabric.

These will now look like two loops.

Step 4 of making a facemask out of a sock

Step 5) Open up the loops

Using your hands, stretch the loops you have cut. Once you have done this a few times,

the material will loosen. Now snip the loop so it opens up into a long string.

Step 5 of making a facemask out of a sock

Step 6) Thread your facemask

Using the string you have just made, thread one end up through the first slit in the rectangle,

down through the second and so-on (till you have completed one side)

Step 6 of making a facemask out of a sock

Step 7) Repeat this on the other side

You will now have a rectangle with both sides threaded

Step 8) Tie a knot on each side

These knots will hook around your ears to hold the facemask onto your face.

You can adjust the size of the knots at any time.
